Eeyou Marine Region

Eeyou Marine Region covers 61, 270 km2 in the eastern James Bay and south eastern Hudson Bay. There are 5 coastal Cree communities and 2 Nunavik Inuit communities adjacent to the EMR.

Land Claims Overview

The Eeyou Marine Region Land Claims Agreement (EMRLCA) recognizes fundamental Cree rights and interests in the James Bay and Hudson Bay, protecting their ability to manage land and preserve cultural practices.

Our Role

The Eeyou Marine Region Planning Commission (EMRPC) is mandated to guide development and resource use in the marine region by developing and implementing a land use plan.

Working Together for a Sustainable Eeyou Marine Region

The Impact Review Board (EMRIRB) and Wildlife Board (EMRWB) work together to protect the land, water, and wildlife in the Eeyou Marine Region. The EMRIRB reviews projects to ensure they’re safe for the environment and communities, while the EMRWB focuses on wildlife management, regulation and research. Together, they balance human use of the marine region with respect for nature and Cree culture.

Impact Review Board

The Eeyou Marine Region Impact Review Board (EMRIRB) mandate is to review the ecosystemic and socio-economic Impacts of Project proposals.

Wildlife Board

The Eeyou Marine Region Wildlife Board (EMRWB) mandate is to act as the main Instrument of Wildlife management and the main regulator of access to wildlife.

Planning Partners

The Eeyou Marine Region Planning Commission (EMRPC) collaborates with the different regional planning partners in an effort to ensure coordinated and effective management.

Nunavik Marine Region Planning Commission

The Nunavik Marine Region Planning Commission (NMRPC) is the Nunavik Marine Region’s planning body with a similar mandate as the EMRPC. The EMRPC and NMRPC must work together to plan for the area where the Eeyou Marine Region and Nunavik Marine Region overlap.

The Eeyou Planning Commission (EPC) was created by the Cree Nation Government (CNG) in 2017 to assist with land and resource use planning responsibilities in Eeyou Istchee, focusing on balancing development, conservation, and preserving the Cree way of life.
